Family Guy podcast: crapping on your own great product

Fans of the grubby, puerile and absolutely hilarious Family Guy are predominantly young and wired - the perfect audience to connect with through the internet. You’d think.

But Fox have messed up with their promotion of Family Guy through the UK version of iTunes with their low-value collection of podcasts.

Here’s a comment from one not-so-happy-anymore fan:

“Seriously, what is the point? It’s just some guy reading a summary of the show. He could be getting it out of the TV guide. Fox, please stop producing this rubbish. Don’t even think about downloading this.” iTunes UK link

And that was one of the less angry comments. Who thought this was a good idea? Family Guy is an animated comedy. The writing is funny but the animation is just as fundamental to the humour. Having someone reading out the script is under-delivering to an audience which is thirsty for exclusive content and passionate about your product. Off to BitTorrent they will go.

To their credit, the more recent podcasts have at least included some real content - including interviews with actors. But the damage is done as has the opportunity to delight the most enthusiastic of fans.
